Sample Fund-raising Letter
Dear ____________________,
Hala, now a student at DePaul University, fled the violence in Baghdad, taking refuge in Damascus, Syria. While volunteering with the Red Crescent, she met Gabe Huck and Theresa Kubasak, parishioners from St. Nick’s, now residing in Damascus. Determined to help rebuild Iraq, Gabe and Theresa founded the Iraqi Student Project (ISP) specifically to assist talented young people like Hala, whose lives and education have been disrupted by war.
The idea is simple: The Iraqi Student Project (ISP) invites colleges and universities throughout the United States to offer tuition-waivers for undergraduate study to qualified young Iraqi refugees After interviews and testing, accepted youth receive tutoring in English to prepare them for university work in the U.S. These young people obtain student visas for their four years in the States, with a pledge to return to rebuild their war-torn country. DePaul University – along with over 16 other undergraduate institutions – has generously provided a four-year tuition waiver and accepted Hala as a Freshman. She arrived in Chicago in late August and has completed orientation and started classes.
- Your financial and community support is crucial!
Over $10,000 is needed each year to provide for Hala’s books, food, travel, and living expenses. That’s where I come in. I’ve mailed my check to Elizabeth Mertic, c/o Iraqi Student Project, 708 Dodge Ave., Evanston, IL 60201.
Can you do the same? If you’d rather contribute by credit card, see www.iraqidepaul.org, where you’ll also learn other ways you can support Hala. For more information on the ISP in general, including links to national media, see www.iraqistudentproject.org.
If each of us gives between $25 and $1,000, together we can take a small, personal step towards rebuilding Iraq by supporting one student who will help to make it happen. Thank you for your generosity! .
Sincerely yours,
